Lionheart Educational Trust, overseeing 17 schools across Leicestershire and Derbyshire, sought to modernise their student assessment process. Their goal was to create a faster, more insightful way to evaluate student learning while reducing teacher workload.

Modernising Student Assessment Methods with AI
Lionheart Educational Trust required support to enhance how their 17 schools designed, created, assessed, and compared student learning outcomes.
The existing process was manual, time-consuming, and lacked integration between systems.
Lionheart needed a solution that could rapidly build assessments, automate marking, capture data consistently across schools, and enable richer analysis of learning outcomes linked to final exam results.
Delivering an Integrated Digital Assessment Platform
The solution: Nimble Approach delivered a comprehensive digital platform that seamlessly integrates with Microsoft Teams, built around two core components: Big Teach and Big Insight.
Within Teams, teachers can easily create and assign quizzes that students complete directly in the platform. Automated marking handles multiple-choice questions instantly, while AI evaluates written responses using teacher-provided model answers and a structured knowledge framework. Every AI-marked response is then reviewed by teachers, maintaining accuracy and pedagogical integrity.
All assessment data flows into Big Insight, a suite of Power BI dashboards that brings performance analytics to life. Teachers and school leaders can explore class results, attendance, and projected grades, as well as compare performance across subjects, cohorts, and schools.
This data-driven visibility supports smarter interventions and targeted support for students.
Developed through close collaboration with the Lionheart team, the platform was evolved iteratively, ensuring it not only meets technical needs but also empowers educators with practical, actionable insights.

Unlocking Smarter Insights Across Schools
The results: The new system transformed how the Trust’s schools create, manage, and interpret student assessment. Teachers now spend significantly less time on creating assessments and marking, with automated processes reducing administrative burden and freeing time for direct student engagement.
The Power BI dashboards have reinforced a culture of evidence-based teaching, allowing staff to monitor performance, compare cohorts, and identify areas needing targeted support.
The platform also supports Lionheart’s digital learning strategy, with Chromebooks now distributed to three year groups at two pilot schools to enable full system access.
Through this solution, the Trust has achieved greater consistency in assessment practices, faster feedback cycles, and richer insight into pupil progress across subjects and schools. The next phase of the rollout will see even more pupils benefit from access to devices and the big teach platform.
Reflecting the innovation and technical impact delivered through this partnership, the work has since been submitted to the MAT Excellence Awards in the Digital Innovation Award category.
The nomination recognises the bespoke solution we developed and the tangible improvements it has enabled – from reducing teacher workload to strengthening student learning and embedding more effective data-driven decision-making across the Trust.
