MyTutor is a major provider of online tutoring in the UK. It is the UK’s most trusted tutoring platform by parents.
They adopt cloud technologies to run a platform for learning and to provide tutors with the tools they need to educate, Nimble’s input and knowledge sharing has enabled MyTutor to become cost efficient in the cloud even after Nimble has gone. They are now able to better identify and own AWS cloud costs effectively across the business.

Their challenge

Since it first launched the brand has seen considerable growth and with the 2020 Covid19 restrictions has grown even quicker as parents and schools turned to technology to support children with learning.

While both schools and parents sought catch up education for those that missed, the MyTutor platform was seeing all time traffic highs. This meant, as with any opex cloud platform, the cost to run significantly increased. They knew they could make savings but didn’t know or have capacity to realise them.

Our solution

Nimble discussed with the MyTutor senior technologists on options for cloud cost optimisation and embarked on a 5 day discovery phase to identify and eliminate wasted spend within the MyTutor hosting platform.

Our approach

  • Right Sizing – updating systems to the optimum size.
  • Retention refactoring – tuning systems to reflect restore points. 
  • Runtime Tuning – reconfiguring application level properties to reduce load
  • Removal – identifying and deleting unused resources Stop/Start schedules – implementing a process for full environment destruction and restore.

Using the above, Nimble was able to help MyTutor to realise a saving on their monthly cloud bill of over £10,000 in just 5 weeks. With a projected further £5,000 a month should they continue to optimise using the knowledge and expertise Nimble have shared.

The huge saving to MyTutor is enabling them to invest more in security and feature updates to improve their product and service for their client.
